As an avid gamer and a recent flight simulator junkie, I’m always on the lookout for the best gaming gear available on the market. First off I’d have to say that the feel of a flight controller is so much more realistic and gives you better overall control. The Saitek X52 comes with five position handle adjustments, so I was able to customize the grip accordingly. With such a comfortable grip, I can easily envision myself playing for longer than the usual hour or hour and a half I normally play for. Now I understand how my friends can play a minimum three to four hours on their systems. I also like the illuminated buttons on the controllers. It lets me see what I’m doing in dim lighting. But I’m sure after a couple of sessions I’ll be well familiarized with the position and functions of each button without even looking. With the Smart Technology that’s incorporated into the flight control system, I’m able to program my controllers for different games. On top of it all, what’s really impressive is the LCD multi function display. It really enhances the overall gaming experience.

When it comes to playing airplane simulation games, a lot of people wish there were more realistic hand held controllers that would actually replicate your hand held devices within the games that you play. I play a lot of flight simulation games and have been looking for gear that gives you a more accurate feel of the action that’s going on onscreen. I’ve heard a lot about the Hotas Warthog Joystick by Thrustmaster from a lot of my acquaintances who play as well. I decided to look into it.

When I first read about the Hotas Warthog, I was quickly impressed with its design and build. It looked very sturdy and so much like the real thing. At first I was a bit hesitant to purchase it since the price was generally more than I would like to spend on my gaming hobby, but I figured I could easily sell it to one of my acquaintances because they absolutely love this model. I went online and bout the Warthog Joystick for a little less than $400. It arrived only 2 days later. Once I received the package, I opened it up right away to check out the contents inside. It was quite heavy, weighing in at about 15 pounds. I could already tell it wasn’t going to be like no other controller I’ve ever had.

It’s Absolutely Realistic

The joystick alone was pretty heavy and well made. It was solid metal, long and narrow and provides a well fitting grip for the hand. The dual control system is just as imposing as its joystick associate. These controllers have a total of two direction hatch switches with built in push buttons and fifty five fully programmable action buttons. The H.E.A.R.T. HallEffect Techonology magnetic sensor system incorporated into the joystick allows for extreme position. It’s spot on commands and actions translate accurately onscreen. This hardware is so heavy that it pretty much requires the same amount of pressure you’d put on a real airplane controller. For more control, you’re able to detach either the base or the joystick’s handle itself from the rest of the controller.

In addition to great hardware, you also get a great software that accompanies the Hotas Warthog. T.A.R.G.E.T. software lets you play your flight sim games with the highest level of performance. There are three different programming levels within the software that allows you to customizer the controller’s settings as you see fit. Choose from basic, to advance, and script. Script allows you to employ the full potential of the T.A.R.G.E.T. software. Now you can feel like a pro when using the joystick.

Thrown Into Action

Although you start off as a rookie pilot on a mission that does not seem all that important, but inadvertently get thrown into a full scale war, that is one of the largest in the history of mankind. This is where your real fighting begins and you are supplies with all the right arms and ammunition by way of which you are just on a bombing spree. You get to lead a whole host of combats not only in the air, but also on the land and water. With a supply of real ammunition, the bombing saga gets even better.

During the course of your path, you will find yourself in the best of aircrafts that are supplied with a lot of controls, but while playing I realised that most of the controls are of little or no use to me. All I was required to do was, pull out my heaviest ammunition and blast away the nearest enemy on target with a simple lock on target and press the button move.

Tactically, there is precious little to do, which makes the game pretty simple. However, some of the moments in the game I found really entertaining. For instance, the manufacturer does score on the fact that the fighter plane experience feels very real. As you progress from one level to the other, you get to experience a bigger and more sophisticated aircraft and the battle intensifies. There are some manoeuvres that you can carry out with these mean machines that will bring on an adrenaline rush.

Ugly Duckling

But what really does not work for the game are the looks. It will be no exaggeration to call it downright ugly. The imaging and animation effects are mediocre and have a very old look to it from almost a decade back. Besides it does not work on the 480 p mode and does not fit to widescreen. So your best bet is to put it on some 16 inches TV set that is locked out somewhere in the basement.

In conclusion , this is a game that is definitely not a must have, Yes, it does have it moments of glory in air combat, but it’s relatively basic, something that you will probably have played almost a decade back. So unless you are looking at simple linear missions you could probably give Heatseeker a shot.

Blazing Visuals

The game is really high on the visual quotient and it’s like actually like flying over the River Thames or the Big Ben or Eiffel Tower. Some visuals give you goose bumps like the one in Batlle of Britain when thick black smoke from the bombings makes the London sky look really eerie from your cockpit. But as much as I was impressed with the important landmarks, the other regular buildings seemed like a misfit, and looked like first generation graphics that stood out like a sore thumb. Also the realism factor is kind of amiss in the game. For instance, every time the aircraft bursts into flames it is really easy to summon Joe (one of the volunteers) who gives out an instruction and with a push of a button your aircraft is repaired almost miraculously. Now this seemed all too easy to me!

But where the game really scores is on the controls department. The controls seem intuitive and it is quite a kick to be able to control these sophisticated aircrafts with such precision. Besides there is camera that focuses on the next enemy on target and makes it easy to point and shoot. However in the single player mode it can become a bit of a drone as you get into the fly plane shoot bomb mode over and over again. However, it scores again on the multiplayer mode where you as a team can defend against the crafty and agile Japanese that has to offer some real moments of thrill. My favourite in the game was the capture the base where you and your team can fulfil specific objectives to swoop down and capture a base after having successfully outdone your enemy by strategy.

In conclusion, with the Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII Xbox, the manufacturers have offered a decent game, but with obvious flaws. It is like for every right thing that they did, they have done a corresponding wrong that makes this game a not so hot option for hardcore air combat admirers.

If you looking for thrill and hi speed in your airplane simulator game, the Ace Combat Assault Horizon is just the thing for you. In this game there is a new approach to what Project Ace’s original vision was. A battle of epic proportions in the sky. I liked the dramatic proportions that the manufacturers have added to the game. It is action being told in a cinematic kind of a format, and beneath the high pitched drama. Although the cinematic form does appeal at first, sometimes I did get the feeling that the storyline was somewhat disjointed. However, this does not, for one moment, take away from the hardcore action that the game promises.

The objective of this game is to defeat a whole wave of enemies in an air combat before you move on to the next level. It’s not a very creative approach, granted, but that’s the way it’s meant to be. The story telling format helps in this aspect. Door gunners, bomber missions and helicopters are a bonus in this game that adds on more layers to the combat. Once I was in control of the game, it felt real good as the manoeuvrability of this game is way better than its predecessors. Besides, there is an extra mode called the Dog Fight mode (DFM) that starts as soon as you hit a button.
The moment you switch on over to the DFM, the fight intensifies and there are direct attacks on the enemy to buckle them down. Expected a lot of adrenaline rush as you switch on to this mode! The real show stealer is however the Apache Longbow- which is also touted as the US army’s pride. With the Apache Longbow you get to know just how superb flying a helicopter is. The controls in this felt just out of the world unlike usual helicopters in games. There will be some challenges when you are flying this, and I have to use tactics and plan my attacks on the enemies while on this one, but in the end it did feel like on hell of an experience.

Wholesome Experience

In full action mode this game is quite a stunner. Although the storyline and the music used is not extraordinary, it has its high points and does justice to the format of the game. The zooming in aircrafts and the smoke like atmosphere feels very real and if you are in the multiplayer mode, you will enjoy the team based tasks that you will be asked to take upon. The music and narrative guides you through and you feel like you are a part of a real air combat.

In a nutshell, this is a polished air combat game, which is a definite improvement over its predecessors. Not too many air combat games are out in the market as of now, so if you are one who like to fight when you are airborne this is just what you have been looking for.
